Workation Proof Accommodation
A creative hotel in a former newspaper building (De Volkskrant) on Wibautstraat in Amsterdam East. 196 rooms ranging from tiny cabins to 45 m² XL suites. The ground-floor Werkplaats is a free-to-use co-working cafe open daily 07:30–00:00. Canvas bar and restaurant is on the 7th floor. Badplaats (sauna + hot tubs) is in the basement. Wibautstraat Metro is steps away.
The ground floor Werkplaats is Volkshotel's open co-working area and cafe. It is free to use for hotel guests: pull up to any table with your laptop, connect to fast Wi-Fi, and order coffee and food. It is open every day from 07:30 to midnight (02:00 on Fridays and Saturdays). For more focus, private work cabins can be booked online. Meeting rooms are available, and there's a regular programme of events including free Jazz Thursdays and Station Werkplaats Friday nights.
Volkshotel has 196 rooms across several types. The Cabin is the budget option — an enclosed sleeping pod with a double bed and shared bathroom. XS rooms are 12 m² with a private shower and toilet. M rooms (18 m²) are the most popular mid-size option. L rooms sleep four with a ceiling-hung bed. The XL is 45 m² with two double beds and two bathrooms (one with a bathtub), including a traditional Dutch cupboard bed. Studios have a kitchen, living room, and private balcony — suited for longer stays. All rooms include free Wi-Fi, safe, and hairdryer.

Canvas is the bar and restaurant on the 7th floor with a rooftop terrace — views over Amsterdam, food from morning to late evening, cocktails, and a popular weekend programme. Doka is the basement club: an intimate sound bar hosting DJs and underground nights. Badplaats is the hotel's basement spa — saunas and hot tubs, bookable separately. The hotel was built around a strong cultural programme and is genuinely livelier than most hotels of its size.
Wibautstraat Metro Station is right outside the door — Metro line 53 connects directly to Amsterdam Central Station in about 7 minutes and to Amstel Station in 2 minutes. Tram lines along Wibautstraat reach the city centre in under 15 minutes. The neighbourhood (Amsterdam Oost / East) is residential and creative, close to De Pijp, Waterloo Square, and Oosterpark. Schiphol Airport is about 20 minutes by train from Amstel Station (600 m away).
Volkshotel is on Wibautstraat in Amsterdam Oost (East), the same street as The Social Hub. It's close to the Amstel river and a short walk from the lively De Pijp neighbourhood and Waterloo Square market. Wibautstraat Metro Station is directly outside — 7 minutes by metro to Amsterdam Central Station. Amstel Station (intercity trains, including Schiphol Airport) is 600 metres south. Oosterpark is a 20-minute walk.
Volkshotel is rated 8.7 on HotelsCombined (5,274 verified guest ratings). Check-in is from 16:00; check-out by 12:00. The hotel is card payments only. Werkplaats is open to the public (not just hotel guests), which means the lobby can be busy at all hours — especially on Friday and Saturday nights when Doka and Station Werkplaats events are running. Light sleepers should consider this when choosing room type and floor.
Very vibrant. Friendly helpful staff.
Location was great for public transport. Easy to get to the city centre and navigate towards different cities.
The service at the breakfast and the food was exceptional! Very impressed with the hotel.
