Why this stay works well for a workation

Traveller Ark Hotel & Bunks sits directly on Petaling Street in KL's Chinatown – one of the most walkable and food-rich parts of the city. Despite the lively street outside, the building itself is calm and well-maintained. Private rooms come with a desk, free WiFi, air conditioning, and blackout curtains. There's a coffee shop in the building and a rooftop with direct views of Merdeka 118. For remote workers on a budget who want a central city base without sacrificing internet or workspace basics, it delivers well.

Working from here

Every room has a desk, free WiFi, and a reading light. The kettle and coffee facility in the room mean you can get started without leaving. Guests consistently mention the WiFi as reliable and fast across reviews. For longer sessions, the common area has a shared lounge and filtered water dispenser. Rooms are described as quiet – including by guests who are sensitive to noise – thanks to the internal layout and blackout curtains keeping street noise manageable after dark.

The rooms

The property offers both private rooms (Queen, Twin) and dormitory bunks (including female-only and mixed dorms of only 4 beds each). Private rooms are notably spacious for the price – guests regularly comment on the size. Rooms include air conditioning, blackout curtains, ironing facilities, a kettle, microwave, and free bottled water. There's no minibar, safe, or TV in all rooms. The rooftop is accessible to all guests and offers clear views of Merdeka 118 and the KL skyline.

Atmosphere and guest mix

The property has a calm, social atmosphere – common areas are used by a mix of solo travelers, couples, and light groups. The rooftop and shared lounge are frequently described as relaxed and comfortable rather than party-oriented. Staff are highlighted across almost every review: friendly, helpful with local recommendations, and responsive over WhatsApp. Justin at the front desk gets repeated mentions for coffee and local food tips. The 4-bed dorms are considered quiet and well-run for a hostel.

Food and daily life

The hotel sits at the top of Petaling Street, steps from one of KL's most concentrated food areas. Hawker stalls, local Chinese restaurants, and budget eateries are all within a 2-minute walk. The Petaling Street wet market and Central Market are nearby. There's a 7-Eleven 130 metres away, and filtered hot and cold drinking water is available in the kitchen area. The in-house coffee shop is a good option for early mornings before the street fills up.

Location

The hotel is at the top of Jalan Petaling, right at the entrance of Petaling Street Market in Chinatown. Milan Station (Central Market) stop is 230 metres away, and Pasar Seni LRT/MRT station is a 5–6 minute walk at 340 metres. Central Market is 240 metres away. From Pasar Seni you have direct access to the LRT and MRT network, making it easy to reach KLCC, Bukit Bintang, or KL Sentral in under 15 minutes. The street itself is closed to traffic from around 9am on weekdays, making the area pedestrian-friendly and surprisingly walkable during work hours.

Final thoughts

Traveller Ark is the kind of hostel that works for remote workers because it gets the basics genuinely right: the WiFi is reliable, the rooms are clean and quiet enough to focus, and the location is as central and walkable as it gets in KL. If you're after a budget-friendly stay in Chinatown with a proper desk, easy metro access, and a solid rooftop at the end of the day, this is a strong option. Private rooms offer good value; the 4-bed dorms are well-run if you're comfortable with shared space.

Great stay

The location was great, right in the heart of Chinatown and Petaling Street. The staff were very helpful. Justin was great for local food recommendations. The room was spotless and very spacious. The Aircon was functional and a warm shower was available at any time. Along with bottles of water and a coffee facility. There is a filtered drinking water machine available in the kitchen area which offers hot and cold water. The rooftop view of the Merdeka 118 was incredible (second tallest building in the world). Overall I would recommend this private room.

Amazing stay

We had a great stay at travellers ark. The rooms are spacious with everything you need, great value for money. Additionally the staff are fantastic and were really proactive when we had a problem with our fuse box late at night. Justin's coffee is the best coffee we have ever had - we are still thinking about it. Great social spaces with a relaxed vibe and good views of the world's second tallest building which is a bonus. Good location, bear in mind it is in China town so if you are on the street side there is some street noise but we slept through this with no issue. It gives easy access to the rest of KL and excellent food stops so was worth it!

Perfect stay - 5 nights

We had a really great stay in a private room at Traveller Ark. We checked in after hours with clear and accurate instructions and someone was at the front desk to greet us; there was always someone at reception and communication via WhatsApp was always quick and easy. Our room was spotless: no signs of bugs, mould, cracks, or other smells. We requested a room on a high floor and away from the elevator, so it was a quiet stay. The AC worked great, the room was spacious, and there was enough shelving for us to put our things on. The rooftop was so comfortable and it was nice that it and the lobby common area were quietly used by other people staying. It was a nice vibe and surprisingly calm amidst the bustling street. I would recommend this place and would consider staying here again if we were back in KL.
