Why this stay works well for a workation

The RED is a self-managed apartment hotel in a tower in KL's Golden Triangle. Rooms are 37 sqm with a proper desk, free WiFi, coffee maker, blackout curtains, and a balcony – enough space to actually work from. The building is calm: no busy lobby, no foot traffic. Check-in is handled via WhatsApp and a key box, which means minimal interruptions once you're settled. It's positioned 220 metres from Dang Wangi LRT and within walking distance of KL Tower, with cafes and restaurants at street level. For remote workers who want a spacious, quiet room in a well-connected central location without paying full hotel prices, it's a solid choice.

Working from here

Every room has a desk, free WiFi, and a coffee and tea maker. The rooms are 37 sqm – larger than most city hotel rooms at this price point – which means the workspace doesn't feel cramped. Blackout curtains help with early mornings after late work sessions. There's no traditional reception to worry about; the property operates via WhatsApp communication, which several guests describe as fast and responsive. The building is quiet during the day, which suits focused work well.

The rooms

Rooms come as King or Twin, both with a private balcony. At 37 sqm each, they're consistently described as spacious. Amenities include a flat-screen TV, in-room safe, air conditioning, ironing facilities, and free bottled water. Rooms on higher floors look out over KL Tower, Bukit Nanas, and the Petronas Towers. The indoor pool is on the 25th floor with city views. Note that this is a self-managed property: there is no physical reception. Instructions arrive by WhatsApp before check-in, and key collection is from a mailbox in the lobby.

Self check-in and how it works

Once your booking is confirmed, the host contacts you via WhatsApp with a video showing how to collect your room card from the mailbox. Guests consistently describe this process as smooth and well-explained. There is a security guard on-site. Staff are reachable via WhatsApp during your stay for any issues. This setup works well for independent travelers who don't need a front desk – and is less relevant if you need in-person assistance for complex requests.

Food and the surrounding area

The hotel is in the Golden Triangle, with 194 walkable places listed within short distance. Restaurants and cafes are directly below the building. Yut Kee Restaurant – one of KL's most beloved old-school Hainanese spots – is nearby. Jalan Masjid India and its street food are a short walk. Sogo mall is about a 10-minute walk. The nearby Chow Kit area has a fresh produce market and local eateries. An ATM is 110 metres away and there's an on-site convenience store.

Location

The RED is inside the M101 tower on Jalan Kamunting in the Golden Triangle – one of the most central and walkable parts of KL. Dang Wangi LRT Station is 220 metres away, and Medan Tuanku Monorail Station is 300 metres (a 6-minute walk). Both give direct access to KLCC, Bukit Bintang, and KL Sentral. KL Tower is 600 metres away on foot. The street-level environment is busy with restaurants, bars, and small businesses, but the building itself sits slightly set back from the main thoroughfare.

Final thoughts

The RED works well for remote workers who want a spacious, central room at a budget-friendly price. The self-check-in setup is minimal friction once you understand how it works, and the lack of a physical reception actually makes for a quieter, more independent stay. The 37 sqm rooms with desks, blackout curtains, and free WiFi cover the workation basics. The Golden Triangle location – with LRT access a 3-minute walk away – makes it easy to get anywhere in KL quickly. If you need full hotel services or late-night noise isn't a concern, this is very good value for the price.

Excellent

Just got to know at my recent trip that it's now a self check-in hotel. So there's no reception area; you almost see no staff at all, besides the security and cleaners. Upon booking, you will receive a msg with a number to contact. Communication via WhatsApp was smooth and hassle free with the host. Fast reply. Room card collection at the mailroom was straightforward, and the room was clean and it smelt good upon entering. Bed and pillows are still as comfortable as I remember from years ago. Automated carpark was also safe and convenient as it's just at the back of the hotel. Laundromat just downstairs too. And one of the best parts is, there's awesome food nearby the hotel — the best nasi kerabu! And nasi lemak paru. The perfect KL breakfast. This hotel is definitely highly recommended.

Please stay here!

I stayed in this room for 1 night. It is very spacious room for 2 people actually. Does not provide drinking water but not a big deal. Check in process was smooth. The staff was very helpful to help me doing the check in (you need to text them to get passcode no). One more plus point, near to LRT station and all the hip cafes. Restaurants and cafes just down the hotel.
