Why this stay works for a workation

Hotel La Pergola is a 3-star hotel at Belpstrasse 43 in Bern, located in the Kirchenfeld neighbourhood on the south side of the Aare, about 810 metres from Bern Hauptbahnhof — effectively two stops on tram line 3 from the city centre. It scores 8.9 Excellent on Agoda (service 9.3, cleanliness 9.2, value 9.0) across 142 verified reviews, and was renovated in early 2025. The hotel has free WiFi in all rooms, daily housekeeping, a quiet garden, and a bar in the lobby where free coffee and hot water are available. What sets it apart for multi-night workation stays is the free e-Bern transit pass the hotel sends by email before check-in, covering all trams, buses, and trains within the city fare zone — a meaningful saving in a city where individual tickets cost around CHF 2.60. Rooms are clean and compact; the hotel is honest value in a country where budget accommodation is hard to find.

Rooms and work setup

Room types include Single Room, Classic Double Room, Comfort Room, and Business Room. Rooms are on the compact side — guests consistently note this — but clean, well-maintained after the 2025 renovation, and comfortable for a short to medium-length stay. Free WiFi is confirmed in all rooms. There is no air conditioning, which is standard for most Swiss hotels at this price level; rooms have a fan available and some look onto a garden with trees, keeping them naturally cooler. The hotel has a lift, and rooms have safety deposit boxes. There is no minibar or kettle in rooms, but the lobby bar downstairs provides free coffee and hot water throughout the day.

Value and the free transit pass

Hotel La Pergola is consistently praised for offering good value relative to Bern's hotel market, where three-star options regularly exceed CHF 200 per night. The hotel's most practical perk for a workation is the Bern guest transit pass: before check-in, the hotel emails a code to download a free e-ticket covering unlimited travel on all trams and buses within the Bern city zone. This effectively eliminates local transport costs for the entire stay — useful if you plan to work from different locations, explore coworking options around the city, or commute to meetings. Parking is available nearby at CHF 15 per night in a secure underground car park. Breakfast is offered at the hotel at extra cost; the surrounding Kirchenfeld neighbourhood also has cafés and a Migros supermarket within walking distance.

A quiet residential neighbourhood with easy access to the centre

Kirchenfeld is a calm, largely residential district south of the Aare river — home to the Bern Historical Museum, the museum of natural history, and the Swiss Alpine Museum, all within a few minutes' walk of the hotel. It is a good base for focused work: no bar noise, no heavy tram traffic overnight, and a small garden at the hotel. The Federal Building (Bundeshaus) is 750 metres away. The Old Town and Clock Tower are roughly 1.3–1.4 km, reachable in 15–20 minutes on foot or quickly by tram. Berne University Hospital is 700 metres away, so the area has all essential services nearby.

Getting around Bern

The nearest tram and bus stop is a short walk from the hotel. Tram line 3 (direction Saali or Weissenbühl) runs from just near the hotel directly to Bern Hauptbahnhof in two stops — around 6–8 minutes. Bus 3A to Weissenbühl also stops close by (HASLER stop). With the free Bern transit pass included in the stay, using public transport costs nothing. From Hauptbahnhof, direct trains run to Zürich (~55 minutes), Geneva (~1h45), Basel (~55 minutes), and Lucerne (~1h10), making Bern a reasonable base for day trips or client visits in other Swiss cities.

Location

The hotel is on Belpstrasse in the Kirchenfeld district of Bern, on the south side of the Aare. It is 810 metres from Bern Hauptbahnhof — two stops on tram line 3 or a 10-minute walk. The Federal Building (Bundeshaus) is 750 metres away and the Old Town is around 1.4 km. The neighbourhood is quiet and residential, with museums, cafés, and a supermarket within walking distance.

Getting to and from the airport

Bern Airport (BRN, also known as Bern Belp) is 6.2 km from the hotel. A taxi or private transfer takes around 20 minutes. From the airport there is also a train service to Bern Hauptbahnhof (roughly 30 minutes), from where you can take tram line 3 to the hotel. Note that Bern Airport has limited international routes; most visitors flying internationally arrive at Zürich Airport (ZRH, ~100 km), which has a direct train service to Bern Hauptbahnhof taking approximately 55 minutes.

Clean and great location

Lovely hotel in a very central location, short walk to the streetcar. Fast check in, clean room however on the smaller side. Do note there is no air conditioning. Breakfast is extra however you can grab a coffee in the morning. Parking is 15 CHF but make sure you ask for the free Bern transit pass.

Excellent Service! Very clean room

I have only positive things to say! Very clean room, staff was very good in explaining everything, and cost was reasonable. It's a little walk to Einstein haus...however , close enough where it really wasn't a problem. I highly recommend this hotel if you stay in Bern!

Agoda

Best All rounder

Stayed at La Pergola now 4 or 5 times. Won't stay anywhere else. Great value for money and close to all amenities and center. Staff here on each visit have always been very professional. Parking, you do have to pay for but it is very reasonable with secure underground parking. I will continue to stay here.
