Area Guide
Uluwatu, on Bali's Bukit peninsula, is all dramatic cliffs, world-class surf breaks and beach clubs with spectacular sunsets. It is more spread out than Canggu or Ubud, but has a growing number of coworking spaces and remote-work-friendly stays.
Best for
Surfers and remote workers who want cliffs, beaches and sunsets
Best months
April to October (dry season)
Time difference with CET
+7 hours in winter, +6 hours in summer
Cost per day
Roughly €60–€130 including a good private room
Internet
Good in coworking spaces and remote-work-focused stays; patchier elsewhere
Less suited if you want to walk everywhere or want a big social scene. You will need a scooter or driver.
Coworking spaces and stays aimed at remote workers usually have fast internet, but villas further out can be less reliable, so ask for a recent speed test before you book.
An eSIM gives you mobile internet from the moment you land and a backup for important calls. Read my guide to eSIMs for workations.
Co.op Coworking
A relaxed space with day passes around IDR 150,000 (about €7), including a coffee.
Monday Coworking & Coffee (Ungasan)
Open from morning until late, with day passes around IDR 200,000 (about €10).
BWork Uluwatu and Uluwatu Hub
Larger spaces with more facilities; Uluwatu Hub’s day pass includes a pool and gym.
Bingin and Padang Padang
Surf beaches with cafés and guesthouses. Lively, especially around sunset.
Pecatu and Ungasan
Quieter, further from the beaches, with newer villas and coworking spaces.
Stays I list in Uluwatu:
A rough week for one person, excluding flights:
Stay
€300–€700
For a private room or villa with a desk
Food
€80–€160
From warungs to beach clubs
Coworking
€45–€90
For five day passes
Transport
€30–€60
For a scooter or Grab and Gojek rides
Also budget for
Bali is seven hours ahead of CET in winter and six in summer. Mornings are yours, and the European workday lands in your afternoon.
Apr–Oct
Dry season and the best surf on the west-facing breaks
Nov–Mar
Rainy season with heavy afternoon showers
Nyepi (Day of Silence), usually in March
Bali shuts down for 24 hours
Uluwatu is about 30–60 minutes from Denpasar airport by car, depending on traffic.
Distances are big and there are few pavements, so rent a scooter (only with the right licence) or use Grab, Gojek or a local driver.
EU citizens can get a 30-day visa on arrival or e-VOA for IDR 500,000, extendable once. You also pay the Bali tourism levy of IDR 150,000. Remote work on a visitor visa is a grey area; for longer stays, look into Indonesia’s remote worker visa.
Watch the Kecak fire dance at Uluwatu Temple at sunset
Surf or watch the surfers at Uluwatu, Padang Padang or Bingin
Visit Melasti beach below the cliffs
Have a sunset drink at one of the cliff-top beach clubs
Yes, with the right stay. Coworking spaces have good internet, but the area is spread out.
Uluwatu for cliffs, surf and quieter evenings; Canggu for a bigger remote work community and more cafés within reach.
It helps a lot, but only ride with the right licence. Otherwise use Grab, Gojek or a driver.
Uluwatu is part of my Bali guide, next to Ubud, Canggu and Sanur. Compare Bali with the rest of the region in my Southeast Asia guide.
